Like the previous decks in the Nouveau Series, Gemmes is inspired in the historical and mythological characters some believe were used for the creation of the first decks in Rouen during the 16th century. As for the art style, it was inspired by Art Nouveau jewelry. Art Nouveau is a style of decorative art, architecture and design promoted and popularized in Paris in the late 19th century and characterized by intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms.

The pips and number cards keep the intricate design from previous editions, with the only exception of the index pips, which take a much simpler form in order to make the cards playable.
