Introducing the Patreon deck: Stinkers! This OPC-inspired durian deck was the first concept I came up with when I started card design four (?!) years ago. OPC had just released Peelers v2, and Theory 11 had released The Tavern on the Green. I was appreciating the simplicity of Peelers, and nearly everything about TotG (not the card back though lol). And what really made TotG stand out for me, more than anything else, was the pips. Those elegant, striking half-gold pips! It gave me an idea–an idea which you now know: the durian. King of fruits! The idea has sat for a few years. I didn’t want my first deck to be a joke/parody design, so I carried on with other things. And with every OPC release since then I have stood by with silent dread, hoping that they won’t announce Stinkers before I actually get to it. But now the time has come! The design starts with the pips! They have a pleasing, organic quality to them (with stems on the spade and club!) And a wonderfully contrasting bright half, as of the fruit in the husk. The outside of durians range in color from yellow and green into deep browns, and the interior, while often yellow, can also be some incredible reds and oranges. I let these colors inform my pip choices, as well as the broader color palette for the rest of the design. Consistency is good!
