Gustave Doré was born in Strasbourg, France on January 6, 1832. He was an art prodigy, illustrating from the age of 5 and sculpting from the age of 12. He excelled in engraving steel and wood. All of the artwork featured on these cards was engraved by hand.

His expressionism and dark signature are primary themes in The Raven Black Dusk. These cards show some of his most notable works, along with lesser known pieces.
