Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Prince of Albania and one of the most important figures of 15th century Europe. Named Skanderbeg – “Alexander the Great” by the Ottomans, he quickly rose through the army ranks, becoming one of the greatest generals in the empire. In 1443, after many successful campaigns for the empire, Skanderbeg returned to Albania, dedicating his life to fighting for his homeland, and soon after was elected the commander in chief by the League of Albanian Princes. For 25 years, until 1468, Skanderbeg’s 10,000-man army successfully pushed back the Ottoman forces, winning against a consistently larger and better-supplied army. He was greatly feared and respected worldwide, gaining a mythical reputation.
