Deck Details

Full Description

The Tarocco Genovese is a 79-card bridge-sized deck, including 21 trumps, 16 court cards, and 40 numerical cards, plus a Fool and an Invexendon, tribute to an unnumbered trump mentioned by Sir Michael Dummett in his list of Unresolved Problems Concerning Tarot and Italian Cards. The set also includes a companion booklet written by Jean Maillard, who co-created the project.

The illustrations on the Tarocco Genovese shared the same with Genoese Tarot released in 2022. Although, comparing to the original, this edition introduces several innovations, among which are:

  • New Suits: The suits are shaped like the classic design, compared to the graphical suits on Genoese Tarot.
  • Four-Color Suits: Each suit has its own color, just like of a whilst deck.
  • Quad Pips: Every corner of the cards has an index. Aces are indicated as 1 instead of the usual A
  • Four Illustrated Aces: All Aces have illustration done in Metallic gold ink: filigree frame and Janus stamp; animals (as seen on Ace of Hearts in Genoese Tarot); soldier with a long crossbow; St. George slaying the evil dragon.
  • Gold-Frame: Metallic gold line border found on the Courts and the Trumps. For the Trump Cards: The Fool, The Magician, and The World have yellow background.

The updated colour palette immediately stands out, inspired by an 1830 Tarot de Marseille printed by the Recchi brothers in Oneglia, a town in Liguria (now part of Imperia).

The card backs echo the design of the Ace of Hearts, with the iconic red cross of St George at the centre. It has a thick white border, meant for use for classic gameplay.

Published and printed in Italy by Dal Negro, this deck features gold accents on both faces and backs. The packaging, crafted by Boschiero & Newton, is made from high-quality cotton paper using letterpress and foil techniques. There is a circular die-cut hole on the front of the box which views to the Ace of Hearts.

Please note that while the cards are cello-wrapped, the tuck box is not.
