From insert included with the deck: The illustrations for these playing cards are all derived from exhibits in the collections of the British Museum. Clubs depict images from Ancient Egypt, Spades from the Assyrians, Hearts from Ancient Greece, and Diamonds from various Medieval sources. The pips have been modified slightly with iconographic designs (same for each suit) relevant to the associated ancient culture.
