This Black Palekh deck was made by the Leningrad (St.Petersburg) factory of color printing in 1967 to commemorate their 150-anniversary. Originally named as ‘Jubilee’ playing cards these cards became well known as Black Palekh. Art design by the Russian artist Pavel Bazhenov (1904-1941). The cared are made after the beautiful, remarkable, and labour-intensive Palekhware which is usually put on decorative dishes and keepsakes such as boxes. The date of this particular deck is unknown. The back and front of the tuck box show different jokers, however the deck has identical jokers which are much more detailed with much fuller colour than those seen on the tuck box, although the forms of the jokers are very similar. The deck includes a Bordered card with a blank face. The backs are two-way and Bordered.
